Ernie Baudhuin, at age 94, is a testament to his belief
in a Turkish proverb: A heart in love with beauty
never grows old.

He keeps this hand-calligraphed motto framed
prominently in his home gallery in Palm Coast.

"I intend to stay close to my art affiliations as long as
I’m able,” he comments.  “After all, art is my life. I’ve
often been asked to what I attribute my longevity, and
that Turkish proverb says it all.”

Ernie’s career as an artist spans some 57 years,
during which he was involved in various aspects of
the graphic arts. He devoted his spare time to
painting. His favorite subject was wildlife, which he
portrayed in a variety of mediums: pastel, watercolor
and acrylic, primarily. He enjoyed plein air painting as
well. All told, he figures he has created more than two
hundred paintings, many of which have won acclaim
both in the Upper Midwest where he grew up and here
in Florida, where he has resided for more than 16
years. His work has appeared in galleries and
societies in Wisconsin,, Michigan and Florida, and he
has won numerous awards both here and in his
original home markets.

Ernie has still another claim to fame. He created
the logo of the Green Bay Packers. Furthermore,
he and his twin brother, Ervin, have been honored
by the Packers as two of their oldest fans.

Ernie’s style has evolved over the years. “At first
I painted exclusively with pastels, but one of my
clubs challenged me to get into watercolor,” he recalls.
“I loved it. I combined pastel with watercolor,
but I do primarily watercolor now. I also like acrylic.
I have become adept at blending acrylics. They are
more demanding. They force me to be what you
might describe as more carefree because they dry
faster."

The trick Ernie developed with this medium, he says,
is to paint the sky first, using water to blend. Then he
paints the rest.

Among his favorite pieces displayed prominently in
his home gallery are paintings of loons and a cougar,
as well as a dramatic piece called “Fatal Armistice.”
The latter was dedicated to the memory of 12 duck
hunters who died during a storm on Armistice Day 70
years grieving dog.

Ernie has given back much t o the community over the
years. He has taught art and mentored many students
here in Palm Coast through Adult Education, and he
has played an important role in the growth of FCAL.
He joined when he moved to Palm Coast 16 years
ago, after he saw the FCAL gallery which existed in
the Palm Harbor Shopping Center during that period.
“When I came here, the art league had 35 members.
Now there are over 260,” he notes. Over the years,
Ernie has been active in working shows , helping
members and promoting places to exhibit. During
Joan Mangano’s recent  tenure as president, he was
appointed a mentor to the art league, and at this
year’s opening meeting, he was again honored for his
contributions to FCAL.

Ernie worked his way up th e hard way. He loved
sketching throughout his childhood and had been
accepted by the Chicago Art Institute up on high
school graduation. This prestigious school would have
helped him with his tuition, but the death of his father
forced him and Ervin to go to work at age 17 , as they
were the oldest of six siblings. Ernie took night
classes to get his art education and cites a great
professor—Franz Massopust, a known artist and
designer in Ernie’s home town o f Green Bay—
for mentoring him during this period.
