Drawing and Painting with Weldon Ryan

  • Weldon Ryan is a retired detective.  He was in the sketch unit of
  • NYPD and has over 10 years experience in the forensic art field. He
  • retired in 2004.  Weldon teaches the following 3 classes at FCAL....

  • Drawing Class (for portraits):  
  • Drawing is the first step to art.  Besides crayon, the pencil is usually the first medium
    used to draw.  Most artists and painters have moved on to other
  • mediums.  I’ll show you why pencil is still special. Along the way we will learn the
  • fundamentals of drawing with an emphasis on portraits.  Supplies you should
  • have: some tracing paper (any size) 11 x 14 Drawing pad, 11 x 14 Bristol board pad
    (optional for advanced drawing), drawing pencils various degrees of hardness( 2H,
    H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B,4B, 5B,6B), kneaded eraser, gum eraser, white plastic eraser,
    sandpaper block, various blending stumps, and a willingness to have fun.  This
    class is continuous.

  • Portrait painting in oils/acrylics:
  • This class is a beginner’s class on the fundamentals of portrait painting. For
  • more flexibility, oils enable the artist to work with more time
  • and is more relevant while acrylics dry at a quicker rate and
  • is a more complexed medium for portrait art. We will work
  • from a simple portrait palette and work from a live model and
  • photographs. Small model fee may be needed.class on the fundamentals
  • of portrait painting.

  • Paints ‐ any student grade brand (Be frugal) Daler‐Rowney Georgian Oil Colors are
  • affordable. Pure colors can be substituted for Hues
  • Titanium white/Permalba white (if found)
  • Naples Yellow
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cadmium yellow Lt. Hue.(L)
  • Cadmium orange Hue.(L)
  • Cadmium Red Lt. Hue.(L)
  • Alizarin Crimson (Transparent)(L)

  • Bristle ‐ Flats and filberts – 2, 5, 7, 10 and flat # 12 for covering larger area.
  • Sable – rounds – 0, 3, and 6 (costly: synthetics will work. Cheapest for student work
    and
  • experimentation…be frugal but quality counts)
  • Paint Medium‐
  • Turpenoid or odorless paint thinner‐ Art store superior and expensive/Home depot
    cheaper.
  • Linseed oil
  • cobalt dryer
  • Gumsol by Grumbacher
  • Additional stuff
  • 1Palette knife for cleaning palette
  • 1 palette knife for mixing paint
  • 2 Clip‐on Painting cups (1 for medium, 1 for turpenoid) **small glass jar works as
    well.
  • Paint box for storage and transport.**Tool box works as well
  • Paper towels and old phone book or newspaper for cleaning palette
  • White rag to work with.
  • Cheap 16x20 canvas to paint on.

  • PAINTING FROM STILL LIFE

  • Still life painting in oil & acrylic:  
  • The still life set up will be available for 4 weeks.  Students are invited to participate
    in OPEN STUDIO on Saturdays to continue working on their pieces between
    classes.  Open studio is free for all members.
