Chinese Brush Painting - Lucy Suhr



  • Chinese Brush painting is a centuries old method of painting using no preliminary drawing,
    working flat on a table.

  •  It is done on silk or various handmade papers(so called rice) made from mulberry bark,
    hemp, bamboo and pineapple leaves.

  •  Chinese brushes are used consisting of brown hair(rabbit, wolf), white hair(sheep, goat) and
    combinations of both.

  •  Tube and chip colors are used diluted with water. White guoache is also used as is liquid
    Chinese ink.

  •  Subjects include bamboo, flowers, animals, birds and landscape, starting with the panda.
    Painting are mounted to be flat for framing.



  •  Materials needed are:

  •  A small palette or porcelain dishes.

  •  Chinese brushes

  •  CHINESE RICE Paper

  •  Felt piece about 14"x 18"

  •  MARIE'S CHINESE Tube colors, also white gouache

  •  Container for water

  •  Paper towels

  •  Bag to hold it all.
