- Naturalist Artists in the South," by Jay Williams, Gary
R. Libby Curator of Art at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach.
- Jay's presentation will center on John James
Audubon, Mark Catesby, and Alexander Wilson. The tradition of the naturalist-artist is rooted in the period known as the Enlightenment, when Great Britain's Royal Society was founded. According to the Society, knowledge should be tested by individuals using their senses, making observations in the field. When Europeans and Americans of European descent first encountered the natural world of the Southeast, they found a fascinating array of fauna and flora from rattlesnakes to magnolias, to mocking birds. America's birds captured the attention of Catesby, Wilson, and Audubon. After telling the story of these artist-naturalists, he will describe the museum's soon- to-open exhibition,"Got Feathers?"
